New proposals suggested by experts from industry and academia reveal how industry and government can lift the UK’s growing artificial intelligence (AI) industry by implementing the technology across the economy – from smarter scheduling of operations in healthcare, to hiring on-demand self-driving cars.
The independent review, titled ‘Growing the Artificial Intelligence Industry in the UK’, reports on how AI can grow in the country, and will inform BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) and DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) policy. It follows the Industrial Strategy green paper, published in January 2017, which identified AI as a major, high-potential opportunity for the country to build a word-leading future sector of the British economy.
AI is being used in many sectors across the UK on a daily basis. For example, the UK health industry is using most advanced AI, Your.MD, which has built the world’s first AI personal health guide that provides users with immediate trustworthy healthcare advice from the NHS to anyone with access to a mobile phone. In banking, HSBC has created an AI chatbot called ‘Olivia’ that verifies customer identity and increase security for the bank’s customers by assisting them with their enquiries 24×7, all year round.
